REAL CANBERRA ROAD SCENARIO #1:
Sulwood Dr.and Athllon Dr. Roundabout

Road Ready Centre We're4Zero logo
Canberra Driving School Scenario

QUESTION:

๐ŸŸข You are in the Green car and want to turn left.
๐Ÿ”ต The Blue car behind you is beeping for you to go.
โ“ Is it safe for you to go? Why or why not?

๐Ÿšฉ BONUS POINTS: How many other driving red flags and issues can you see in this scenario?ย ๐Ÿ‘€

If you’re feeling confident, give us your opinion in the comments!

— YOU SHOULD NOT ENTER THE ROUNDABOUT – WAIT FOR SAFE ENTRY

  • The law is that you must only enter a roundabout if there is no danger of a collision and also give way to vehicles on the roundabout.
  • Just the same as a T-intersection or slip lane, the green car is not permitted to pull into the roundabout because it then it wouldnโ€™t be giving way, even though the red car is in a different lane.
  • Because the red car may change lanes as it comes through the roundabout, there is a danger of a collision.
  • Itโ€™s also illegal to use your horn to pressure other drivers and can come with a maximum of 20 penalty units, which equates to a fine of $3,200!

REMEMBER: Under Australian road law, your primary responsibility as a driver is to ensure safety and take all safe and reasonable steps to avoid a collision, even if it means deviating from standard road rules.

REAL CANBERRA ROAD SCENARIO #2:

Reed St. and Scollay St. Intersection

QUESTION:

๐ŸŸข You are in the Green car and want to turn right.
๐Ÿš“ A police vehicle has just arrived with it’s lights on, signaling a turn right.
โ“ How does this intersection resolve?

๐ŸšฉBONUS POINTS: What are some other risks and issues in this scenario?

This is a genuinely tricky intersection at times, so don’t be surprised if your answer is different to others. Remember, we always want to maximise the safety of ourselves and others on the road!

— YOU ARE THE LAST TO MOVE, IN UNISON WITH THE LIGHT BLUE CAR

  • First and foremost, drivers are required to give way to emergency vehicles with active warning devices (e.g., sirens or flashing lights).
  • The Red and Yellow drivers need to determine if it is better to clear the intersection by continuing or stopping, to make sure they are not obstructing the emergency vehicle.
  • The light blue car needs to move forward and to its right to let the police car proceed.
  • The action order therefore is Red, Yellow, and Green/Blue going simultaneously, with the emergency vehicle having priority when it reaches the intersection at any point in the order.
  • The light blue car needs to move forward and to its right to let the police car proceed and should have originally stopped as far to the right as possible when waiting at the intersection for a right turn.

REMEMBER: Under Australian road law, your primary responsibility as a driver is to ensure safety and take all safe and reasonable steps to avoid a collision, even if it means deviating from standard road rules.

REAL CANBERRA ROAD SCENARIO #3:

Hinder St. and Anthony Rolfe Ave. Intersection

QUESTION:

๐Ÿ”ต You are in the Blue car and want to go straight.
๐Ÿ”ด The Red car is indicating to turn right onto Anthony Rolfe Ave.
โ“ Who has right of way here? Is this a roundabout?
๐Ÿ“ Maps Link โ–บ https://maps.app.goo.gl/pwzdYDKXK2GbcNEr7

โœ‹ This intersection was raised by one of our page followers. They have seen a lot of confusion, awkward pauses and collisions from drivers here.ย  If you have an intersection you want us to cover, send us a message and we’ll do our best to recreate it!

— YOU MUST GIVE WAY TO THE RED CAR

At the top of this one, we just want to say that we believe this is a poorly designed and planned intersection. It is also however one that Access Canberra uses for its driving test. So, if you are doing your driving test in Gungahlin, it’s good to understand the rule. It’s also a rule that is not easy to judge when you are negotiating the intersection.

The rule to know for this is – โ€˜the traffic island (next to the Red car) is wider than the minimum distance to make the two roads passing it separate one-way roadsโ€™. That means the road the Red car is on is still Anthony Rolfe Ave, which has right of way. Another way of looking at it is that as soon as the red car moves forward it is on Anthony Rolfe Ave, so the blue car has to give way to it.

But how can you tell when you are in your car if the traffic island is wider than that minimum distance? Hence our opinion about the design issue.

  • Regardless, according to the rules they are therefore considered two different roads.
  • Because the Red car is turning out of one road onto Anthony Rolfe Avenue, the blue car has to give way to it.
  • What we recommend is watch to what the Red car does. Quite often they think they have to give way, so if they sit there waiting.
  • If you are on your driving test, stay calm an communicate to your driving assessor that you are aware that they have right-of-way.
  • If you are a fully licenced driver, we recommend breaking the confusion by slowly beginning to move and watching the Red car carefully to avoid a sudden take off if they change their mind.
  • This is technically breaking the road rules, but it is also ensuring that we are not obstructing traffic and resolving the intersection in a timely manner.
  • More dangerously though is if the blue car thinks they have right of way and fail to give way to the red car when the red car is pulling out.

REMEMBER: Under Australian road law, your primary responsibility as a driver is to ensure safety and take all safe and reasonable steps to avoid a collision, even if it means deviating from standard road rules.

REAL CANBERRA ROAD SCENARIO #4:

Glenloch Interchange

QUESTION:

Vehicles A,C and D are merging into Glenloch Interchange.
๐Ÿ‘‰ย Specify the correct merging order of these 5 vehicles on Glenloch Interchange. Check the exact location and conditions hereย ๐Ÿ‘‰ย https://maps.app.goo.gl/BRz33mQzYRXy8M2GA

The correct answer is ABCDE, if we consider all vehicles are travelling at the same speed. A is ahead of B so can merge safely, then C has to give way to B and merge behind it, followed by D then E. However, it’s difficult to tell exactly how much space they have. If A and B are too close then A needs to slow down and give way to B. Remember the traffic merging has to give way to the traffic on the road they are merging onto, so both B and E should NOT have to move into the right lane, the merging traffic are required to adjust to align with gaps in the traffic. What we are seeing now is merging traffic not doing early preparation and waiting until they reach the merging point then trying to work out what to do, which then forces the traffic on the road they are merging with have to take action to protect themselves from the merging traffic.

REMEMBER: Under Australian road law, your primary responsibility as a driver is to ensure safety and take all safe and reasonable steps to avoid a collision, even if it means deviating from standard road rules.
